THE 24 Km square wall surrounding tanzanite mining in Mererani area, Simanjiro district, Manyara region will be officially inaugurated tomorrow.
According to Arusha regional commissioner Mrisho Gambo, President Dr John Magufuli will preside over during the ceremony to be held within the area.
Construction of the said wall which was done by Suma JKT started in September last year and completed last month.
President Magufuli ordered construction of the said wall in July last year when he was in a tour of Northern region in Tanzania.
Speaking during an event to launch 26 km tarmac road at Naisinyai village in Manyara, President Magufuli directed the National Service Corporation through its wing Suma JKT to construct a 24km square fence surrounding tanzanite mining area
“Construction work should start immediately; we have to protect our natural resources so that it benefit all Tanzanians,” said Magufuli who started a three day visit in Arusha region.
The completed wall surrounded the mine rich are block A to D which are owned by the government.
He also said that the 24 km wall will be fenced with electrical wire and fixed with camera and have single entrance gate. The measure is aimed at controlling all Tanzanite mine drilled from the area, since for a long time Tanzania has been losing millions of foreign currencies due to smuggling.
The gate will be installed with a modern detector machine that can spotlight any hidden substance, he said.
Magufuli said the government wants to increase revenue garnered from tanzanite mining which currently stands at 5 percent.
Apart from wall, Magufuli said that from now onwards, all tanzanite sales would be conducted at Mererani area.
